Box Score HAVERFORD, Pa. – A hard-fought doubles sweep, including two come-from-behind efforts, helped the TCNJ women's tennis team end the regular season with a signature victory as the Lions edged out a 5-4 result at No. 36 Haverford on Saturday afternoon.
Anusha Rangu registered her 50
th career win for the Lions, while
Jenny Landells and
Navya Yemula each moved to within one victory of that milestone.
TCNJ (14-2) finished the regular season unbeaten against Division III opponents, its only losses coming to Divison I Lafayette and Division II Wilmington.
Charlotte Roarty and Landells were dominant out of the first doubles slot, rolling to an 8-1 victory over Abbey Russano and Ellie Esterowitz.
Chase Eisenberg and Yemula came through with a come-from-behind win at No. 3 doubles, rallying from a 5-3 deficit to snatch an 8-6 decision from Summer Williams and Annie Barrett.
That set up a see-saw match at No. 2, where
Aira Abalos and Rangu somehow were able to erase 4-0 and 5-1 deficits to force a tiebreaker. After storming out to a 5-0 lead, they gave the next five points back but managed to shake off the shock to snare a 7-5 breaker and polish off the sweep.
Haverford roared back by taking courts No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 in straight sets, but Abalos stopped the run with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Rachael Fitzgerald in the number two flight to put TCNJ on the brink of victory.
With Landells (No. 5) and
Morgan Grimmie (No. 6) both locked in decisive third sets, the Lions would need at least one to come through – and it was Landells who came through. She used an early break to springboard her past Barrett, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, and seal the deal for TCNJ.
Grimmie got to the precipice of victory but was unable to hold on to a 5-2 lead and dropped a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 thriller to Anne Tobin.
TCNJ begins postseason play on Wednesday, when the Lions host Rutgers-Camden in the semifinals of the NJAC Championship Tournament.
