Box Score UNION, N.J. – The TCNJ softball team suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Rowan on a walk-off in the NJAC championship game on Sunday.
The Lions fell to 27-9 overall and will await their NCAA Tournament fate. The field will be announced live on NCAA.com at 1 p.m. Monday.
TCNJ jumped out to an early lead with a first-inning run, courtesy of an RBI double from the red-hot
Julia Mayernik.
After the Profs (33-8) equalized in the bottom of the second, the Lions regained the upper hand with a two-run third.
Kaci Neveling led off the frame with a single and stole second before scoring on
Lauren Conroy's RBI double. With Conroy going to third on the throw home, the senior was able to score on
Jaclyn Carifi's RBI groundout.
Rowan answered back with a single run in the bottom half to get within 3-2, and the score stayed there until Liz McCaffery tied it with a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.
Camryn Davies worked a walk in a long two-out at-bat in the seventh, but Conroy's hard line drive was caught in left-center and the Profs came to bat with a chance to walk it off.
With
Marina Costello, one of the heroes of Wednesday's come-from-behind win over Kean, in the circle, McKenzie Melvin led off with a base hit up the middle and stole second with one out.
After Costello got a strikeout for the second out, Korie Hague sent a hard-hit ground ball up the middle. The ball looked destined to find its way into center field, but Davies somehow managed to snare it with the backhand. With a possible play at second, her throw to the bag was off-line and allowed Melvin to score the winning run.
Carifi finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Lions, which got a 6-for-14 effort from the first five batters in the lineup.
Ally Schlee allowed three earned runs on seven hits with a walk and three punch-outs in five-plus frames, with Costello surrendering two hits to go with three strikeouts in her relief outing.
