No. 11 Field Hockey Falls to Cavaliers in OT

RADNOR, Pa. – The No. 11 TCNJ field hockey team was narrowly defeated in overtime, 2-1, in a close match at Cabrini on Tuesday evening.

The Lions (3-1) nearly pulled off their fourth consecutive shutout to start the season, but the unbeaten Cavaliers found an equalizer with 3:50 left in regulation and won it in the extra session.

Kayla Cichlar scored the lone goal for the Lions, breaking a scoreless tie in solo fashion with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter. After stealing the ball from a Cabrini defender within the shooting circle, the senior immediately fired the ball past the Cavaliers goalie and found the back of the cage.

However, a goal by Cabrini's Maura Tumelty nearly five minutes into overtime clinched the win for the Cavaliers (6-0).

The game was sent into overtime with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, when Cabrini broke the Lions' shutout streak after Daly Ewing scored off a double assist as her goal rebounded off a shot from Grace Gallagher that was followed by a pass from Grace Caspar.

For the Lions, senior Shannon DeCosta made a terrific defensive save in the fourth quarter, marking the first of her career. Dani Britton also recorded seven saves in the game.

TCNJ looks to rebound from the loss as the Lions return home Saturday for a nationally ranked matchup against No. 10 Messiah. The start time is scheduled at 1 p.m. The game begins a tough slate which sees five of the next seven contests come against nationally ranked foes.
