EWING, N.J. – Matthew Michibata reached a major career milestone as the TCNJ men's tennis team put together a pair of sparkling performances over the weekend at the annual Lions Invitational.
Michibata won his 50
th career doubles match for the Lions, who went 11-2 overall against Ithaca on Saturday and 13-3 versus NYU on Sunday.
Ronaldo Jacome,
Nikola Kilibarda, and
Akul Telluri all went 4-0 for the weekend for TCNJ.
Michibata's milestone moment came alongside Telluri, with whom he secured an 8-5 defeat of Ithaca's Eric Dubilirer and Siddharth Vaada. Telluri came back to handle Ean Lantzy, 8-2, in singles.
Kilibarda partnered with
Asa Wong for an 8-3 win over Jacob Wachs and Tyler Del Zoppo, then registered an 8-2 victory against Carlos Angeles Hernandez.
Rookies Jacome and
Harrison Maitland-Carter tallied an 8-5 triumph over Luis Vega and Jimin Woo, with Jacome then handling Vaada by an 8-2 count in singles. Maitland-Carter was an 8-4 winner over Woo.
Adrian Tsui edged Dubilirer in singles, going to a tiebreaker before pulling away for a 7-3 decision.
Derek Jordan and
Alberto Thomas both won, 8-1, in singles play, and
Brett Schuster recorded an 8-3 victory.
On Sunday against NYU, Michibata and Kilibarda paired together for an 8-2 win in doubles. Kilibarda wrapped up his unbeaten weekend with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of Rumaish Khastgir, and Michibata closed out a tight 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 win opposite Alex Yang.
Telluri played with Schuster on Sunday, and the pairing worked to the tune of an 8-3 victory opposite Khastgir and Alex Lee. Telluri and Lee squared off again in singles, with Telluri coming from a set down for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 win.
Jacome and Thomas edged Shrey Arora and Devan Sabapathy, 8-6, in doubles, and Jacome made it a 4-0 weekend thanks to a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Arora.
Dorian Makarski and
Jacob Quijano squeezed out an 8-7 (4) tiebreaker doubles win, and
Curt Gruber and fellow rookie
Camden Poitras eked past Massimo Perrotta and Ilan Leventhal, 8-6.
Jordan, Maitland-Carter, and Jordan were all straight-set winners in singles play for the Lions, while Schuster and Poitras each won a tiebreaker.
The Lions head to Drew University for the ITA Northeast Regional over the weekend of September 30-October 2.
