HOBOKEN, N.J. – Ivonne Vasquez scored in the 73
rd minute to break a scoreless tie, and that was all the No. 16 TCNJ women's soccer team needed as it earned a hard-fought road victory at Stevens on Tuesday night, 1-0.
Vasquez's goal provided a just result as the Lions controlled the play throughout the evening. TCNJ outshot Stevens, 17-8, and also held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
That pressure from TCNJ directly contributed to the goal. The Lions forced the Stevens defense to play the ball back to goalkeeper Dana Perry. Perry then tried to move to the ball to a defender, but Vasquez intercepted the pass and beat the retreating goalie on a low shot to the far post from 15 yards out.
Although the second-half shots were 8-5 in favor of the Lions, the chances stacked up on TCNJ's side before Vasquez's goal. The Lions had three shots and a corner kick in the first 15 minutes of the second half, and that included a post hit by
Emma Pascarella.
Ava Curtis also sent a shot high less than a minute later.
Corinne Byrum made a big save soon after that sequence, cutting down the angle on a shot by Jana Mucci. That allowed her to smother the attempt as the game remained scoreless. Byrum finished with three saves.
Vasquez had three shots in a six-minute span later in the half, and the third of those ended up as the game-winning goal. She finished the match with a team-leading four shots.
Pascarella, Curtis and
Gianna Minerva all had three shots. Two of Pascarella's were on net, and the third was the one that rang off the post.
The Lions return to action at Ramapo on Saturday at 1 p.m. to open NJAC play in the 2022 season.
