COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – For the second game in a row, the No. 16 TCNJ field hockey team fell just shy in a fourth-quarter comeback against a nationally-ranked opponent, as the Lions narrowly lost to No. 20 Ursinus, 3-2, on the road Wednesday evening.
Despite finishing the game with an 11-10 edge in shots on goal and an even nine penalty corners as Ursinus, the Lions (3-3) were unable to complete the comeback after their opponent took a two-goal lead in the second half of the match.
The Bears (3-3) struck early in the game, after Jordan Moore capitalized on a penalty corner 30 seconds into the first quarter, scoring off assists from Sarah Symes and Laura Rothschild.
TCNJ responded shortly after when
Sophia Foschini found
Bella DiNardo on the left side of the cage, who tapped in the ball just past the reach of the Ursinus goalie to tie the game up at one apiece. The score marked DiNardo's first as a Lion.
The Lions entered halftime with a 13-12 edge in shots and tied with the Bears in penalty corners with seven.
Ursinus took a commanding two goal advantage in the third period after two unassisted efforts from Rothschild and Mary Lauren Franz.
In the fourth, super senior
Sophie Popp quickly cut the Bears lead in half after just the first minute, when she found the back of the cage for her second goal on the season. However, the Lions were unable to fire off another shot the rest of the game as the Bears played a stifling defense and controlled the ball on the Lions' own side of the field.
TCNJ will return home this Saturday to take on No. 4 Salisbury at 1 p.m.
