READING, Pa. – Led by
Jess Hatch's two-goal performance, the TCNJ field hockey team shut out Albright, 3-0, on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The Lions (4-4) combined for 28 total shots, with 17 on target, while holding Albright (2-7) to only five on the other end of the field in a stellar defensive display. TCNJ also held a decisive 17-4 edge in penalty corners. In total, five Lions attempted three or more shots, with Hatch (7),
Mia Lanzilotta (5), and
Sophie Popp (5) each attempting five or more.
TCNJ's offense erupted in the second quarter, helping the Lions get out to a commanding three goal lead. Hatch got the scoring started on a penalty corner a little over four minutes into the quarter, when she found the back of the cage off an assist from
Rayhanah Ahmed.
With under four minutes in the half,
Mia Lanzilotta scored her third goal of the year off a rebound on her own shot that was saved by Albright goalie Veronica Heckman. Hatch followed up less than a minute later on a penalty stroke, which saw her score her team-leading fifth goal on the season. The senior set a new career-high in the game with seven total shots taken.
While the second half of the match saw the Lions go scoreless, the offense still attacked relentlessly as TCNJ outshot Albright 13-1 and held a 9-0 penalty corners edge.
Dani Britton earned her fourth shutout of the season. The super senior finished the afternoon with three total saves. The sophomore duo of Ahmed and
Claire Engebreth combined for six total shots-on-goal, as each finished with three. Junior
Sophia Foschini also saw both her shots hit on goal.
Albright was led by Chelsea Johnson, who finished the game with three shots for the home team. Heckman finished the game with 13 saves.
Following the victory, TCNJ will stay on the road this weekend as they open up NJAC play against No. 2 Rowan. The start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
