HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Led by a dominant offensive team performance and a stout defense, the #15 TCNJ field hockey team routed Juniata, 7-0, on the road at the Knox Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Combining for 24 total shots (20 on target) as a team, the Lions' offense was led by the duo of
Sophia Foschini and
Carly Cole, who each scored two goals apiece with six total shots on goal. In addition, senior
Kileigh Pfluger racked up a career-high three assists. On the other half of the field, TCNJ's defensive effort shined through as the Lions stifled the Eagles offense, allowing no shots all game. The Lions also held a decisive 7-0 edge in penalty corners.
Foschini got the offense rolling towards the end of the first quarter, when she scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Pfluger.
A pair of goals struck in succession in the middle of the second period, when
Kayla Cichlar assisted on goals by
Claire Engebreth (23:16 mark) and Cole (24:21 mark) to push the Lions lead to 3-0 at the half.
In the third, Cole scored her second goal of the game off another assist from Pfluger. The lead would balloon to 5-0 after Pfluger connected once again with Foschini later in the period.
Rayhanah Ahmed scored her first goal of the season on an unassisted tally early in the fourth.
Mia Lanzilotta tacked on the final goal of the game off an assist from
Bella DiNardo to make the score 7-0 in the final minutes of the match.
The goalie trio of
Dani Britton (45 minutes),
Brigitte Racey (8:42), and
Saige Berkowicz (6:18) combined for the second shutout in a row to start the season. Britton starts the season with 105 straight minutes without allowing a goal.
Following the win, TCNJ looks to keep its early winning streak alive as they host DeSales for the home opener next Saturday at 1 pm at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
