1/14/2023 6:52:00 PM

COLLEGEVILLE, PA.- The TCNJ Wrestling team picked up right where they left off last weekend Saturday at the Will Abele Invitational at Ursinus College. Four wrestlers won their respective weight classes and eight more Lions placed in the top five. The team total of 176 points placed the Lions just 2.5 points behind tournament champion RIT.

Matt Sacco (157), Mike Conklin (149), Quinn Haddad (184) and Peter Wersinger (285) were the four Lions who came home with individual championships. Sacco beat teammate Alexander Martinez in the finals by decision with a 7-2 win. Conklin had three victories by pinfall and took down Mike Glynn of RIT in a 3-2 decision win in the finals on his way to the top of the podium at 149 lbs. Haddad pinned three opponents on Saturday and defeated Colby Giroux of RIT in another close finals, winning 5-4 by decision. Wersinger had a monster Saturday with not a single match of his being decided by decision. He pinned his first three opponents and won both the semi-finals and finals by major decision, including a win over Nate Degroff of RIT with the final tally being 11-3.

Freshmen Alexander Martinez (157) and Daniel Hong (141) both had impressive days. As mentioned before, Martinez fell to Matt Sacco in the 157-pound finals. However, a second-place finish at his first tournament is quite the start to a career. Hong pinned one of his five opponents and made it all the way to the semi-finals before falling to Josh Post of RIT in a thrilling 2-1 decision. He bounced back to win the third-place match over Quincy Howard of Nassau with a 3-1 victory.

Rounding out the Lions who placed on Saturday was Kyle Nase (133), Matt Surich (165), Alex Strashinksy (165), Drake Torrington (141), Joe Daddario (197), Larry Melchionda (133), Jack Murray (165) and Joe Fiordaliso (149). Nase and Surich each had fourth-place finishes while Strashinksy, Torrington, Daddario and Melchionda took fifth place. Murray and Fiordaliso walked out of the Floy Lewis Bakes Center on Saturday with a seventh-place finish.

TCNJ Wrestling is back in action this Friday with a meeting against the Gothic Knights of NJCU in Jersey City starting at 7 PM.
