Champs Again! Wrestling Seals Sixth Straight Regional Title Behind Six NCAA Qualifiers

2/28/2026 5:36:00 PM

EWING, N.J. – TCNJ Wrestling racked up four regional champions and a six-pack of NCAA qualifiers in running their streak of Region III titles to six with a dominant performance in front of its home fans on Saturday.

Garrett Totten (133), Vinnie Santaniello (141), Hunter Mays (174), and D.J. Henry (197) all won their respective brackets and will be joined at the NCAA Championships by Matthew Griffin (125) and J.J. Giordano (149), who secured third place to make it to the national tournament.

Henry was named the region's Most Outstanding Wrestler, while head coach Joe Galante and his staff claimed Regional Coach of the Year and Staff of the Year recognition.

TCNJ racked up 174 team points to outdistance runner-up NYU by 34, extending its run of regional dominance for another year. The Lions piled up nine place-winners over the two-day tournament, with Colin Menier (157) and Jordan Ayyash (165) taking fifth and Luke Theis (184) landing in sixth.

The four regional champions are the most in program history, and the Lions will take at least six wrestlers to NCAAs for the second consecutive campaign.

Griffin is now a three-time NCAA qualifier, with Totten, Mays, and Henry all set to make their second NCAA appearance.

THE CHAMPS

Totten booked his return flight to nationals with a first-period pin of NYU's Jacob Venezia, polishing off his second takedown of the frame with a fall at 2:29.

He did not have to wrestle to defend his title, with Arcadia's Jacob Blair withdrawing via medical forfeit.

Santaniello punched his ticket to nationals in fine fashion, tacking three consecutive four-point near falls onto an early takedown of Ursinus' Andrew Schaen, ending their semifinal match in a 15-0 technical fall with 46 seconds still remaining on the first-period timer.

Santaniello handled Albright's Daniel Metzler in the final, adding eight back points to an early takedown and leading 11-0 after one period. He escaped to start the second and sewed up his regional crown with a takedown and a 15-0 tech fall in 3:25.

Mays rolled into the final with an 18-3 tech fall against Ursinus' Anthony Cerulli, ending the bout with two near-fall points tacked onto his fifth takedown just as the second period came to an end.

In a championship battle of unbeatens, Mays bested NYU's Ty Finn, 7-5. He drew first blood with a takedown late in the first, then added another in the second after an extended period of dominance. He stayed down most of the third period, escaping late for the title-clinching decision.

Henry trailed 5-3 after one period of his semifinal tilt against USMMA's Tyler Withers, but flipped the script with an immediate takedown and four back points in the second, staying on top for the rest of the period to clinch riding time. He was on bottom for the entire third, avoiding back points to clinch an 11-6 victory and a return trip to NCAAs.

Henry then knocked off No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Josh Stahl of York in a dominant effort in the title bout, going in front with a first-period takedown and controlling the proceedings all the way to a 10-3 victory.

OTHER QUALIFIERS

Griffin found himself on the wrong end of a wild see-saw battle with No. 2 seed Malik Asfour of Eastern. In a rematch of last year's semifinal (won by Griffin), Griffin conceded an early takedown but escaped and countered with a breathtaking blitz in which he added two four-point near falls onto his takedown. He was credited with another, but a challenge brick overturned the last near fall and lessened Griffin's lead from 15-3 to 11-3 entering the second period.

Asfour flipped the bout on its head in the second, posting a takedown and near-fall points to knot it at 11-11 going into the third, which Asfour managed to control en route to a 16-11 decision.

Griffin bounced back quickly, cruising to an 11-0 major decision against Misericordia's Jaydin Barreto to reach the third-place bout.

With an NCAA bid on the line, Griffin matched up against fourth-seeded Christian Horvath of Muhlenberg. He scored three takedowns in the first period, the last coming with four back points as time expired for a big 13-2 lead. He added two more takedowns in the second, securing his NCAA qualification with a 19-4 technical fall in 4:17

Giordano stayed alive thanks to a dominant second period against Johns Hopkins' Freddy Pimental. Trailing 3-1, he started the period with an escape, then went in front for good with a takedown. After Pimental escaped to cut the margin to 5-4, Giordano gained some separation with a short-time takedown, then rode out the vast majority of the third period for a 9-5 decision with riding time.

Giordano's two third-period takedowns were enough to get past Gettysburg's Jake Mitchell, 11-3, and advance to the third-place match.

Giordano booked his first career NCAA bid by avenging his loss on Friday, going in front 5-4 on a takedown in the third period. With Michael Williams of Misericordia desperate for a tying escape, Giordano rode out the entire third period to finish off a 6-4 victory in thrilling fashion.

OTHER PLACE-WINNERS

Menier won his first bout of the day with an early takedown on King's Martin Turi, adding an escape to open the third and winning 5-0 on riding time. He dropped out of NCAA qualification contention with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Messiah's Noah Rice, but captured fifth place with a 9-2 victory over Arcadia's Wyatt Leduc.

Ayyash saw a late comeback attempt come up short against No. 3 seed Justice Kockenberry of Elizabethtown in the semifinals, falling 15-7. He dropped a heartbreaker in his next match, taking a 10-9 lead with 10 seconds left on a takedown of NYU's Nick Bell, but Bell immediately scored a reversal to take the lead back and added four near-fall points for a wild 15-10 decision.

The TCNJ rookie claimed fifth place with a late takedown to secure a 4-2 victory over an opponent from Albright.

Theis kept his dreams alive with an overtime win over Misericordia's Robbie Anderson, scoring the sudden-victory takedown with 10 seconds left in the extra session to reach the consolation semifinals. He lost by major decision, 11-0, to Austin Brass of Messiah, and was pinned in the fifth-place bout.
