Montclair State Clips Field Hockey in OT

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The No. 19 TCNJ field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in overtime at Montclair State in Saturday's regular-season finale.

The Lions (10-7, 3-2) fell into a three-way tie for second place in the NJAC alongside Kean and Stockton, but emerged with the No. 2 seed thanks to a head-to-head win over regular-season champion Rowan. TCNJ will host No. 3 seed Kean in the semifinals on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks came out firing with three shots in the first three minutes, including a pair on goal, but Brigitte Racey was there to turn away both on-target efforts to keep the hosts off the board
  • Bella DiNardo and Carly Cole registered shots on the cage in the second quarter, Cole getting hers off just before the buzzer, but neither snuck through as the scoreless stalemate continued into the second half
  • The action ratcheted up after intermission, and the Lions survived a period of sustained pressure from Montclair State late in the third quarter. They managed to keep the Red Hawks off the board thanks in large part to Taylor Wielechowski's first career defensive save, which prevented a go-ahead Montclair goal with 3:43 remaining in the frame
  • TCNJ's defensive unit stood tall again late in regulation, blocking two quick Red Hawk shots following a corner with just over two minutes to play
  • The Lions earned a corner inside the final minute but were unable to cash in as DiNardo had her effort blocked and the clock ran out to force a second consecutive overtime game
  • Montclair had the first chance in overtime, but Racey was up to the task and turned away a goal-bound shot midway through the first extra session
  • The Red Hawks, however, were awarded a penalty stroke with 4:18 to play in OT, and Sadie Eichlin buried it inside the left post
NOTES
  • Saturday marked the fourth overtime game of the season for the Lions, who dropped to 1-3 in such contests
  • Both teams put up 10 total shots (four on goal apiece) in regulation
  • DiNardo (four) and Cole (three) combined for seven of the Lions' 10 shots
  • Racey finished with four saves
UP NEXT
