Women's Soccer Makes it Six Straight with Win Against Rutgers-Newark

EWING, N.J. - The No. 13 TCNJ women's soccer team earned its sixth consecutive win on Saturday with a 9-1 victory against Rutgers-Newark.

After a quick TCNJ goal and an answer shortly after by the Scarlet Raiders (5-8, 1-3), the Lions (9-1-1, 4-0) closed out the first half with three unanswered goals and never looked back.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seven minutes in, Sophie Vieira opened up the scoring for the Lions on a breakaway with a low running shot past the keeper.
  • In the 10th, the Scarlet Raiders knotted the game at one after a chip shot went over the head of a charging Bella Norman.
  • Just moments later in the 11th, Lindsay O'Keefe found the back of the net on a great pass from Emma Pascarella. Ten minutes later, O'Keefe dished out an assist to Ava Garay on her first goal of the season.
  • Six minutes before the half, Rachel Burkhard nailed her third 'Olimpico' goal of the year, scoring via the corner kick to go ahead 4-1 before the break.
  • It took the Lions all of about ten minutes to strike again in the second half as Pascarella scored on the second Lindsay O'Keefe assist of the game.
  • Garay then knocked in her second goal of the game in the 58th off the second Pascarella assist of the afternoon to make it 6-1.
  • In the 80th Alyssa Alfano played a Sofia Alves free kick off the bounce before sending a strike past the goalkeeper.
  • Jaime Girtain assisted on the next two goals to close out the scoring for the Lions. The first was a rebound that landed right in front of Grace Hamlin to put away and the second came off a nice pass from left to right in front of the net for Alfano to cash in on.
NOTES
  • The 9-1 win marks the end of the shutout streak for the Lions at five games and over 500 minutes of shutout soccer.
  • Between the two games this week, the Lions put up a combined total of 19 goals.
  • Pascarella is now just one assist away from tying the single-season record of 13.
  • Saturday marks the first career multi-goal performance for Alfano.
  • Girtain picked up her first points of the season with her two assists.
  • The combination of Pascarella and O'Keefe has combined for six goals and six assists over the last two games.
