PRINCETON, N.J.- The TCNJ wrestling team sent five wrestlers to the Princeton Open on Saturday; the Lions were one of three Division III schools amongst a field of Division I & II programs, including Princeton, Rutgers, and Lehigh.
Representing the Blue & Gold on Sunday were Mike Conklin (149), Alex Strashinsky (157), Nick Sacco (165), Reid Colella (174), and Peter Wersinger (285).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Conklin was sensational in his opening-round matchup with Cole Cifrodelli of Rider, winning by a score of 20-4 and earning a technical fall. In the next two rounds, he met up with Matt Williams and Eddie Hummel of West Point, losing 17-1 and 15-3 in the matchups.
- After receiving an opening-round bye, Strashinsky fell in his two matchups on Sunday morning. He lost his first matchup by a score of 8-3 and was pinned in the second.
- Sacco started his day off strong with a 3-0 victory against Damien Weaver of Rutgers in the opening round. However, the junior lost his next two matchups with a 5-3 loss to Tyler Sung of Lehigh and a 7-2 decision to Macon Myers of Bloomsburg.
- In the 174-pound tournament, Colella dropped his opening-round matchup to Lehigh's Jared Schoppe by a score of 7-2. He then defeated Schoppe's teammate, Keegon Gagnon in the first consolation round. In the second consolation round, he was defeated by a technical fall against Princeton's Mikey Squires.
- Following a 6-2 loss in the opening round, Wersinger rattled off back-to-back wins with a 6-2 win against Evan Anderson of NYU and the next by forfeit. In the third consolation round, Wersinger fell in a bout with Rider's David Szuba by a score of 12-3.
