Wersinger Finishes First To Lead Wrestling at Scott Viera Open

BRISTOL, R.I. – Punctuated by a first place finish from Peter Wersinger, the TCNJ wrestling team concluded its appearance at the Scott Viera Open with a stellar team performance on Saturday.

In addition to the fifth-year senior's top finish in the 285 bracket, the Lions also recorded four other top-three finishes alongside a pair of fourth place performers in the tournament.

TOP-FOUR FINISHERS
Peter Wersinger (285) – First place
  • Wersinger beat out Western New England's Spencer Dickinson in the championship finals bout with his third win by fall in 2:13 to cap off a perfect day.
  • The super senior began his day in the round of 16 with a win by fall against WPI's Trevor Bowen 2:03 into the match. In the quarterfinals, Wersinger continued his dominance by also pinning Michael Mastroianni of Bridgewater State at the 1:34 mark. Wersinger clinched his way onto the finals with an 8-0 major decision win over Johson & Wales' John Iglesias.
Jake Gerish (184) – Second place
  • Gerish had a stellar runner-up finish on the mat in which the sophomore recorded a pair of major decisions in the quarterfinal (11-1) and semifinal (16-3) rounds to advance to the finals. However, the sophomore would experience a 19-4 tech fall loss at the 6:06 mark.
Aidan Carmody (125) – Third place
  • Carmody dominated in the third place bout with a 16-1 tech fall victory at the 3:14 mark, after advancing on a win by fall 5:20 into the consolation semis. The freshman bounced back after a tough 11-12 loss by decision in the semifinals. Carmody's day also included a 21-5 tech fall victory 6:31 into the quarterfinals bout.
Mayson Harms (149) – Third place
  • Harms secured a win by forfeit during the third place bout to bounce back from a razor thin 4-6 loss by decision in the semifinals. The freshman had a stellar match in the round of 16, recording a 19-4 tech fall victory at the 5:18 mark, before advancing to the semifinals on a 6-0 decision victory in the quarterfinals. 
Chris Stavrou (197) – Third place
  • Stavrou clinched a third-place finish with a win by fall over teammate Chris Baker 1:51 into the third place bout, which he secured following a pin 4:40 into the consolation semifinals.  The sophomore began his day with a narrow 14-13 win by decision in the round of 16 before pinning his quarterfinals opponent 2:01 into the bout. Stavrou would get sent into the consolation round with a loss by fall 25 seconds into the semifinals round.
 Chris Baker (197) – Fourth place
  • Baker battled his way into the third place bout after initially falling in the round of 16 by pin at the 3:16 mark. The sophomore would win a pair of bouts by fall (3:17) and by major decision (12-4) to advance to the consolation of four round, where Baker would win by decision (4-2) before also winning the consolation semifinals by a 4-3 decision.
Alejandro Camarena (285) – Fourth place
  • After losing by a 9-6 decision in the round of 16, Camarena made a run through the consolation bracket by recording a 13-3 major decision, fall (3:49) and 8-2 decision to advance to the consolation semis, where the freshman would advance by a forfeit. However, Camarena would fall in the third place bout by pin 6:39 into the match.

The Lions will be back on the mat in a little under a month by taking on the NWCA National Duals on January 5.
