EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's tennis team emerged from a challenging spring dual opener with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over a strong Sweet Briar squad inside the Rec Center on Friday night.
Charlotte Roarty inched ever closer to the 100-win milestone and
Anusha Rangu joined her as a double winner for the 39
th-ranked Lions, who swept doubles play to put themselves in prime position against a Vixens program that went 23-4 and reached the ODAC championship match last season.
Aira Abalos and Rangu kicked off the proceedings with an 8-4 victory over Kate Kotany and Isabela Guilarte at No. 3 doubles.
Chase Eisenberg and Alexas Vasile followed right after with an 8-3 win against Ana Patino and Sofia Andrade at No. 2, and longtime partners
Jenny Landells and Roarty polished off the sweep with an 8-5 defeat of Ruth de Souza and Allison Wandling on the top court.
Roarty quickly put TCNJ on the precipice of victory with a 6-2, 6-2 decision against de Souza at No. 1 singles. It was the 96
th career win for the senior.
The Vixens cut the margin in half and stayed alive with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, and went to a third set at No. 4. But Rangu had the goods, outlasting Nikhita Simhambhatla by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 score line to officially clinch it.
Rangu's three-set clincher became all the more pivotal when Andrade edged Eisenberg in a third-set super breaker at No. 5, and Guilarte won a tight 6-4, 6-4 match with Landells at No. 6.
The Lions return to the Rec Center on Sunday to take on Division I Lafayette.
