EWING, N.J. - The TCNJ women's tennis team more than held its own in an 8-1 loss to Division I Lafayette that was far closer than the scoreline indicated.
Two days removed from a 5-4 thriller over Sweet Briar, the Lions (1-1) found themselves in another dual dotted with nail-biters. Two of the three doubles matches were decided in tiebreaks, and half of the six singles courts went to a third-set super breaker.
Chase Eisenberg and
Alexa Vasile were the victors for TCNJ, pulling out an 8-7 (2) contest at No. 2 doubles to even the match at 1-apiece. The Lions nearly took a lead into singles competition but were denied as
Aira Abalos and
Anusha Rangu conceded a tiebreaker at third doubles.
The Leopards picked up straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4, but the other three were settled by razor-thin margins.
Eisenberg came the closest in singles play, gaining a handful of match points before her opponent at No. 5 singles managed to escape with a 12-10 second-set marathon tiebreak. Eisenberg then dropped a hard fought 10-8 decision in the super breaker.
Charlotte Roarty was also agonizingly close to victory on the top singles court. She lost a tight first set, 7-5, to 2022 All-Patriot League honoree Olivia Boeckman, but rallied for a convincing 6-1 second-set win to force a third-set super tiebreak. Boeckman narrowly escaped with a 10-8 victory.
Jenny Landells also came from a set down to force a third, but fell 10-5 at No. 6.
The Lions return to Division III action Saturday against Union in the Rec Center.
