EWING, N.J. – Chase Eisenberg and
Alexa Vasile each pulled out third-set superbreakers in singles play to help the No. 39 TCNJ women's tennis team complete a 9-0 sweep of Union College in non-conference action on Saturday.
Charlotte Roarty was a double-winner for the Lions (2-1), moving her to within two victories of 100 for her career.
After
Aira Abalos and
Anusha Rangu cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, Eisenberg and Vasile made similarly short work of their opponents at No. 2 with an 8-2 decision.
That left it to Roarty and
Jenny Landells, who held off Marilena Karadimou and Gracie Nicol in a nail-biting 7-5 tiebreaker at No. 1 to polish off the doubles sweep. The Dutchwomen fought off a pair of match points before Landells ended it with a volley winner.
Rangu (No. 4), Roarty (No. 1), Abalos (No. 2), and Landells (No. 6) conceded a combined 10 games between them in convincing straight-set singles victories.
After the first three, and before Landells finished, Eisenberg and Vasile found themselves in nip-and-tuck tilts.
Vasile dropped the first set, 6-2, at No. 3, but rebounded to return the favor in the second and edged Chara Meidani by a 10-8 count in the super breaker.
Eisenberg went the opposite route, winning the first set and dropping the second before downing Skylar Semon, 10-6, in their super tiebreak at No. 5 singles.
TCNJ has a busy weekend on tap next week, taking on Franklin & Marshall on Saturday and RIT on Sunday.
