GRANTHAM, PA.- The TCNJ wrestling team sent wrestlers that were not competing in this weekend's tri-match to the Messiah Open on Saturday. The Lions had four wrestlers place in the top-6 at Messiah.
Alex Martinez was the top performer for TCNJ at Messiah with another second-place finish at 157 lbs. He rattled off four straight wins, two coming by pin on his way to the finals. In the finals, Nicholas Vafiadis bested Martinez in a highly competitive 6-4 decision.
Chris Baker had a terrific turnaround at 197 lbs., coming in fifth after dropping his opening matchup in the tournament. He then won his next three matchups before falling to the third-place winner in a 6-2 decision. In the fifth-place matchup, Baker had his way with Sawyer Dereszynski, pinning him just 1:49 into the matchup.
Matt Surich also had an impressive turnaround at 165 lbs., finishing sixth after losing his first matchup. Surich would put together four straight wins prior to a loss to the fourth-place finisher. In the fifth-place matchup, Surich unfortunately had to forfeit due to injury.
Drake Torrington was the final Lion to place on Saturday, taking sixth place at 141 lbs. Despite losing in the first round, he picked up two major decision wins before losing to the third-place wrestler. Torrington lost in the fifth-place matchup, earning sixth at Messiah.
