McCarthy '17 Gets Call to Mets Radio Team

2/7/2023 9:08:00 AM

Pat McCarthy '17 got the call from the New York Mets to join their radio broadcast team.

The son of Phillies TV broadcaster Tom McCarthy, Pat McCarthy will the WCBS pre- and postgame host as well as its swingman game-caller when Howie Rose – the voice of the team – is off.

"The opportunity to join a major league broadcast booth is truly a dream come true and a tremendous honor," McCarthy said. "It's a humbling and surreal feeling and one that I will never forget. The Mets booth is filled with so much history and to get to work alongside two great broadcasters like Howie Rose and Keith Raad is going to make this experience so much greater.

"It's been such an amazing journey and one that started with TCNJ hosting Ursinus in football back in the fall of 2014. TCNJ means more to my family than anyone can truly know - it's become part of our DNA. I truly wouldn't be here today without all the amazing people that helped me along the way; the base of that starts with the folks at TCNJ. From my parents who laid the foundation for my future; to my wife, Emily, who I met on campus and has supported me the whole way; to our Sports Information Directors Mark Gola and Lyle Fulton, who put me on the air for the first time; and Coach Glus, for giving me memories and friendships that last a lifetime."

McCarthy has spent the past four years as the radio voice of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, the Phillies' AAA affiliate. Since 2016, he has done radio play-by-play for Princeton University football and men's basketball, and has handled play-by-play responsibilities for St. Joseph's men's and women's basketball on the A10 Network. He has also spent time as a spotter with CBS Sports and Westwood One for NFL and NCAA basketball games.

A transfer from Syracuse, McCarthy majored in communication studies with a concentration in television, radio, and film at TCNJ. He played two seasons as a relief pitcher with the baseball team, allowing two hits without an earned run and striking out three over three career appearances. McCarthy also broadcasted games during his time at the college.

McCarthy's hire is something of a full circle moment for the family. Tom McCarthy worked in the Mets radio booth for several years before being promoted to Rose's back-up play-by-play announcer on WFAN in 2006 and 2007. He has been the TV voice of the Phillies since Harry Kalas' passing in 2009.

"Meg and I couldn't be more proud of all of our kids," said Tom McCarthy. "We are thankful for the experiences that TCNJ has afforded them academically, athletically, and socially. It's amazing the thumb print the school has had - and continues to have - on our family and its ability to bring dreams to reality.

"Pat has worked hard and the fact that he has reached such an amazing spot at his young age is a tribute to his work ethic and passion. It's also a tribute to Mark Gola, Dean Glus, and all of his teammates. This is a great spot for him to keep learning and getting better."

In 2021, the younger McCarthy twice filled in for his father on Phillies broadcasts when Tom was calling an NFL preseason game, and last season he did so for about 15 games on both the radio and TV side. He has also appeared on Phillies radio broadcasts and hosts the Minor League Report, a weekly segment on the Phillies Radio Network's pregame show.

McCarthy's younger brother Tommy, a 2019 graduate and former NJAC Player of the Year, is an assistant baseball coach with the Lions and has spent plenty of time on the airwaves for TCNJ, including serving as the play-by-play announcer for tcnjathletics.com men's and women's basketball contests for the entirety of the 2022-23 season. Their younger sister, Kerri, is a thrower on the women's track and field team.
