EWING, N.J. – Matthew Michibata eclipsed 100 career wins and the TCNJ men's tennis team made it two shutouts in a row with a 9-0 sweep of visiting Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon.
Michibata joined women's teammate Charlotte Roarty – who accomplished the feat in the first match of the day – in the century club with an 8-4 victory alongside
Harrison Maitland-Carter at No. 1 doubles. After his No. 1 singles opponent retired in the first set, Michibata's career record now stands at 101-51 (45-30 in singles and 56-21 in doubles).
TCNJ (3-0) got the best of two tight doubles matches and one third-set super breaker in singles against the Diplomats, a perennial Centennial Conference playoff participant.
After Michibata's milestone,
Jacob Quijano and
Alberto Thomas edged Cooper Knutson and Isaac Rockower by an 8-6 margin at No. 3.
Akul Telluri and
Nick Matkiwsky then outlasted Pedro Norte and Gonzalo Gentou, 7-5, in a tiebreaker on the second court to polish off the doubles sweep.
After Michibata's shortened victory, Maitland-Carter officially sealed the win for the Lions with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Rockower at No. 3 singles.
Adrian Tsui remained perfect on the year at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Zac Ashtiani, running his record to 8-0.
Derek Jordan and
Brett Schuster dropped five games apiece in comfortable straight-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Thomas and Gentou went the distance at No. 4, with the TCNJ rookie pulling out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 thriller.
The Lions turn right around to take on RIT on Sunday. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
