EWING, N.J. – The No. 3 TCNJ women's lacrosse team shook off a sluggish start on Saturday, dominating the second half of Saturday's non-conference clash with Colorado College and returning to winning ways with a 14-5 victory.
Julia Charest kept the Lions afloat through a turnover-filled start, racking up 10 of her career-high 15 saves in the first half, after which TCNJ led by a single goal on its rain-soaked turf. But the sun came out in the second half and so did the goals, with
Anna Devlin (five goals),
Ally Tobler (four goals), and
Anna Wright (three) combining to spearhead an offensive surge after intermission. The win snapped a brief two-game losing skid for the Lions, who had previously fallen to No. 1 Middlebury and No. 10 Gettysburg.
The rainy conditions wreaked some havoc early, with both teams struggling with turnovers. The Lions finally broke the ice about seven minutes after opening draw when
Morgan Vaccaro scooped up a loose ball and sent a shot into the back of the net.
The Tigers (7-6), perennially known as one of the premier programs in the West, took the lead with a pair of goals 23 seconds apart, and the score stayed there until the second quarter. TCNJ began to separate with back-to-back goals in 40 seconds, the first on a free-position conversion by Devlin and the go-ahead marker coming on Tobler's high shot through contact.
Devlin extended the lead to multiple goals for the first time with a shot that just snuck under the stick of the Colorado College goalkeeper, making it 4-2 with 5:21 on the second-quarter timer. Not ready to fold, the Tigers pulled one back about a minute later and remained down by just a goal at the break.
TCNJ's lead at halftime was possible because of Charest, who racked up seven saves in the first quarter alone and three more in the second. She saved all three Colorado College free-position tries, registering a .769 save percentage in the first half.
The margin remained at just one after an exchange of goals early in the third quarter, but it was all Lions after that.
Katherine Naiburg maneuvered around a Tobler screen for her first goal of the day, and Charest kept the hosts in front by two with a remarkable save on a breakaway the next time down.
Devlin proved the "better to be lucky than good" when a Tigers defender deflected a pass and Devlin had the ball bounce off her stick and over the goal line for an unlikely fourth goal of the day.
Anna Wright then netted consecutive goals before Tobler scored with 27 seconds remaining in the period to expand the lead to 10-4.
The onslaught resumed in earnest in the fourth, Tobler finding the back of the net again just 53 seconds into the frame. Devlin and Tobler then traded woman-up markers, and Wright brought on the running clock with her third of the day at the 6:58 mark. The Tigers got back within single digits late in the game.
TCNJ finished with a 39-24 advantage in shots, including 23-9 in the second half, and a 14-9 edge in the draw circle.
Sabrina Phillips had two draw controls to run her career total to 199, one shy of becoming the seventh player in program history with 200. Devlin and
Jillian Westerby led the way with three apiece.
Wayden Ay and
Madison Wernik caused three turnovers apiece to headline the defense in front of Charest, and
Kileigh Pfluger had four ground balls and a caused turnover as she made her season debut.
Wright's three goals put her within one of the century mark for her career.
The Lions hit the road to open NJAC play at Montclair State next Saturday.
