EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's tennis team suffered a narrow defeat to Haverford, losing 4-5 at the Tennis Complex on Wednesday.
Leading the Lions (9-4), TCNJ's No. 1 Doubles duo of
Charlotte Roarty and
Jenny Landells faced adversity early against the Fords' (7-7) Abbey Russano and Rachael Fitzgerald, trailing 3-1 after four games, before completely shifting the momentum to take the 8-5 victory.
Anusha Rangu and
Aira Abalos had to come back from an early 0-2 game deficit of their own in No. 3 Doubles. The duo would win six consecutive games to ultimately beat Haverford's Summer Williams and Abhishree Menon, 8-4.
In singles play, Roarty would comfortably defeat Russano in their No. 1 matchup, taking the first set 6-2 before closing out the matchup with a 6-1 set two victory.
No. 6 Singles saw
Jenny Landells clutch out a victory. After losing the first set 6-3, the senior would win set two on a tiebreaker before ultimately coming out on top in the third-set super tiebreaker, 10-4, to take the match.
Fellow senior
Alexa Vasile needed a third-set super tiebreaker to decide her match as well in No. 3 Singles. After taking the first set 6-3, Haverford's Mimi Lavin would force the tiebreaker after winning 6-1 in set two. However, Vasile would ultimately be edged out, 10-8, to lose her match.
The Lions will remain home this Friday to resume NJAC play against the Gothic Knights of NJCU in an undefeated conference showdown. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start time.
