Women’s Tennis Outduels Gothic Knights in 7-2 Victory

EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's tennis team took care of business at home by soundly defeating conference-rival NJCU, 7-2, at the Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.

In a rematch of last season's NJAC finals, the Lions (10-4, 3-0 NJAC) handed the Gothic Knights (8-5, 5-1 NJAC) their first conference loss of the season while also preventing them from clinching the regular season title.

The victory shifts the momentum fully towards the blue and gold, as TCNJ finds itself back in the driver's seat to win the regular season title and to clinch the top seed/home court advantage in the semifinals and finals round of the NJAC playoffs.

In doubles play, the Lions took two dominant victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 matchups. The former match saw the duo Charlotte Roarty and Jenny Landells defeat NJCU's Giada Zorzan and Eliza Clamor by only conceding a lone game to win 8-1. Anusha Rangu and Aira Abalos one-upped their teammates in No. 3 Doubles by sweeping their matchup 8-0.

The Gothic Knights narrowly avoided the doubles sweep by clutching out a tiebreaker victory in No. 2 Doubles. TCNJ's duo of Alexa Vasile and Chase Eisenberg put up a valiant effort in the match but ultimately fell 8-7 after losing the tiebreaker 7-4.

Singles action saw Roarty win her matchup in first court 6-4, 6-3 while Abalos took care of business in No. 2 Singles with a 6-4 and 6-1 victory.

Vasile officially clinched the victory for the Lions in No. 3 Singles when she won her match 6-4 and 6-1.

No. 5 Singles saw Eisenberg clutch out a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-5, to defeat NJCU's S. Zorzan.

Landells cruised through her matchup in No. 6 Singles, losing just a lone game in the two sets.

The Lions will continue NJAC play tomorrow with two road matchups against Ramapo and William Paterson. With looming rain projected throughout Saturday, the schedule could be susceptible to change.
