TROY, N.Y. – The short-handed No. 40 TCNJ women's tennis team came back from its weekend trip to New York State with a split of a pair of non-conference matches, rolling to a 9-0 sweep of Oneonta late Saturday before dropping a 7-2 decision to No. 35 RPI on Sunday.
Saturday's match, which got underway at 9 p.m. in Albany, took hardly 90 minutes to complete. Playing eight-game pro sets, the Lions conceded just two games in doubles and had four of the six singles courts feature 8-0 or 8-1 decisions.
Aira Abalos and
Anusha Rangu were 8-0 winners at No. 3 doubles, with
Jenny Landells and
Charlotte Roarty at No. 1 and
Chase Eisenberg and
Alexa Vasile at No. 2 cruising to 8-1 victories.
Roarty and Abalos each blanked their opponents, 8-0, at first and second singles, respectively. Rangu and Landells prevailed, 8-1, at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively. Vasile took home an 8-4 victory at No. 3 singles and Eisenberg wrapped up the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 5.
Sunday's nationally ranked showdown with RPI saw the Lions down a starter, but TCNJ put up a spirited fight regardless. Two of the three doubles courts went to a tiebreaker, with rookie Amaora Coronado-Luz teaming with Vasile for a nail-biting 10-8 triumph to make her collegiate debut a memorable one.
Roarty took the first set, 6-4, from regionally ranked Nicole Ridenour at No. 1 singles and picked up the victory when her counterpart had to retire with a 2-1 lead in the second set.
The Engineers claimed all five of the remaining singles tilts, though not without resistance. Vasile took her opponent to a third set at No. 3, while Landells and Coronado-Luz each dropped a 7-5 second set, but RPI proved too much.
The Lions return home for a busy Friday afternoon, when they play host to both Drew and NJAC rival Kean at the Tennis Complex. Drew is up first, with first serve set for 3 p.m.
