Baseball Walks it Off Under the Lights Against Stockton

TRENTON, N.J.- The TCNJ baseball team won on a walk-off sacrifice fly for the second game in a row on Thursday night against Stockton. A Mike LaGravenis fly ball to center field in the bottom of the tenth scored Sebastian JnoBaptiste to win in extra innings by a score of 5-4.

Stockton struck first in the top of the first on a single into right center field, taking a quick 1-0 lead.

TCNJ found the answer and then some in the bottom half, scoring two runs on three hits and one error. The Lions tied the game when, with Marcario on second, Ryan Goodall launched a ball down the rightfield line for a standup double. With two outs and Goodall on third, TCNJ took the lead on a blooping Andrew Fernandez single into left field to drive in the second run.

For the next five innings, starting pitcher John DiCostanzo settled in and went to work. In his six innings on the mound, he allowed only one run on two hits and four walks with six strikeouts. While Stockton had opportunities to tie the game at two, the freshman left-hander was having none of it.

TCNJ tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh…Goodall drove in Lagravenis from third on a single in center field for his second RBI of the night. He would advance to second on the play after the Ospreys centerfielder misplayed the ball in center. A couple batters later, the Lions replicated their first inning action when Fernandez once again drove in Goodall from third, giving the blue and gold a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the eighth, the Ospreys erased the runs scored by TCNJ in the seventh with two of their own on a single up the middle with runners on second and third to pull within one.
After holding the Lions scoreless in the home half of the eighth, Stockton found the equalizer in the top of the ninth. The run once again came on a single up the middle to knot the game at four runs apiece. The Osprey bullpen showed up big once again in the ninth, retiring the Lions in order.

Michael Silver took over pitching duties in the top half in the tenth and did exactly what his jobbed asked for, to put up a zero. He struck out two, allowed not hits and walked one batter in the tenth.

In the home half, JnoBaptiste got things started for the Lions with a walk which Zach Weiner followed up with a single to left field. After JnoBaptiste advanced to third on a passed ball and Weiner stole second, LaGravenis sent out the walk-off fly ball to center field to capture the 5-4 victory.

This win moves TCNJ past the .500 mark in NJAC play with a record of 6-5.

Goodall and Fernandez led the way for the Lions at the plate on Thursday evening. Goodall finished 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored while Fernandez had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.

TCNJ baseball looks to build off this win and claim their second sweep in a row with a game two win on Friday in Galloway, N.J. against Stockton with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 PM.
