Sevens Lions Take Home NJAC Weekly Awards

4/25/2023 12:41:00 PM

PITMAN, N.J. – Seven TCNJ student-athletes were selected for NJAC weekly awards, as announced on Monday and Tuesday by the conference office.

While most awards were revealed as scheduled on Monday, baseball and softball selections were delayed until Tuesday morning.

Continuing a dominant season on the track, TCNJ star Eliza Bruncaj won yet another Track Athlete of the Week nomination.

Meanwhile, the tennis women's team saw Charlotte Roarty take home the Player of the Week award, while the men's team swept the East Division awards with Matthew Michibata and Harrison Maitland-Carter taking East Player of the Week and East Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Three Lions pitchers were selected on Tuesday, with freshman Elizabeth Gosse winning the Pitcher of the Week award for Softball, while Jackson Malouf and John DiCostanzo swept pitching awards for baseball.

Roarty finished a perfect 6-0 at No. 1 Singles and No. 1 Doubles in her trio of matches against William Paterson, Ramapo and Stockton to lead the Lions to being crowned as the NJAC Regular season champions.

In the Lions' East Division clinching victory against NJCU, Michibata won his Regionally ranked showdown against the Gothic Knight's Nico Teynie after taking both sets 6-4. He also won his doubles match alongside Harrison Maitland-Carter, 8-5.

Maitland-Carter cruised to a win at No. 3 Singles against the Gothic Knights. He won the first set 6-0, before taking set two 6-2. In No. 1 Doubles play alongside Michibata, the freshman helped win the matchup 8-5.

Bruncaj ran the 2nd fastest time in the nation in the 400m Hurdles with a personal best time of 60.89. That time ranks as the fastest in both the NJAC and Metro region. It is also the fastest time run by anyone in the NJAC since 2015. She also ran the 4x400m relay team and ran the fastest split of 56.7 in the relay that finished with a time of 3:55.01.

In two starts and three total appearances this past week, Gosse picked up a pair of wins alongside her first career save against Montclair State. The freshman gave up just one run in 15.1 total innings pitched. Conceding just 10 hits, she also struck out two batters without allowing a single walk.

In the win on Saturday against Kean, Malouf was dominant on the mound. He went eight strong, scoreless innings while only allowing 5 hits, striking out 5, and walking two. Kean only left two runners in scoring position once as Malouf quickly shut any momentum from the Cougars down.

Against Stockton on Thursday, DiCostanzo shined on the bump for the Lions. In his six innings on the mound, he allowed only one run on two hits and four walks with six strikeouts. While Stockton had opportunities to tie the game at two, the freshman left-hander was having none of it.
