HOBOKEN, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team fell to No. 39 Stevens, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the Lions (9-3), graduate student
Matthew Michibata dominated his matchup in No. 1 Singles against Stevens' (8-6) Aashi Kulakarni by winning the first set 6-2 before clinching with a 6-1 victory in set two.
Junior
Derek Jordan secured the other victory for the blue and gold in No. 5 Singles by winning both sets with a score of 6-2.
No. 6 Singles was a nail-biting one that saw freshman
Brett Schuster narrowly lose in a third-set super tiebreaker. The freshman had won the first set decisively (6-2) before falling 5-7 in the second.
In doubles action, the Lions played competitively in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in two close losses. The duo of
Akul Telluri and
Nick Matkiwsky dropped their matchup in No. 2, 6-8, in what was a hard-fought effort. The No. 3 pairing of
Alberto Thomas and
Jacob Quijano were narrowly edged out in their matchup in a tiebreaker, falling 7-8.
Rounding out the doubles, Michibata and
Harrison Maitland-Carter lost the No. 1 matchup, 8-3.
The Lions will return to NJAC action on Wednesday when they head out to Rutgers-Camden for a rescheduled matchup that had been postponed from March 26
th. The start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
