EWING, N.J. – The No. 13 TCNJ Field Hockey team utilized a pair of clutch time scores to defeat Cabrini 3-2 Wednesday afternoon.
The Lions (3-1) overcame an early fourth-quarter offensive barrage from the Cavaliers (4-1) to tie the match and force the extra period, before ultimately closing the game out with the clutch score. The win avenges the Blue and Gold's narrow road defeat last season against Cabrini.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cabrini struck first with a late first-period score from Adrianna Jones
- Fresh off a NJAC Offensive Player of the Week nod, Rayhanah Ahmed tied the match for the Lions 2:59 minutes into the second frame on a penalty corner set up by Carly Cole. Her shot evaded a crowd of Cavaliers defenders before catching the back of the cage.
- Cabrini earned a penalty stroke opportunity just 17 seconds into the fourth quarter. With the foul forcing senior goalie Saige Berkowicz to briefly exit the match and sophomore Brigitte Racey to enter and defend the cage. In her first appearance of the season, Racey made an excellence stop on the stroke from Caroline Gallagher on a diving effort towards the right side of the cage.
- The Cavaliers would follow up with a relentless attack early in the final frame, with four shots from the 46th to the 48th minutes, however excellent goalie play from Berkowicz neutralized their attack each time.
- However, in the 49th minute, Cabrini retook the lead off a score from Morgan McClintock.
- In the 58th minute of the match, freshman Isabel Maher secured the equalizing goal for TCNJ on a rebound from fellow first year Kara Wilson, and sending the match into overtime.
- The Lions won the match midway into the overtime period in transition when an attacking Ahmed found an uncontested Cole trailing behind the Cabrini backline for the chip in score.
STANDOUT LIONS
- The junior duo of Ahmed and Cole each recorded a goal and assist apiece, with Cole finishing with three shots on goal.
- Following up her NJAC Rookie of the Week selection, Maher played another terrific game with all three shots being on goal and notching the clutch game-tying score.
- Berkowicz finished with a career-high seven saves.
- As a team, the Lions offense operated with great efficiency, finishing the match with 11-of-13 shots being on goal.
