Short-Handed Men's Soccer Scores Late to Deadlock Drew

MADISON, N.J. – Colin Kenville's late goal salvaged a gritty 1-1 draw for the TCNJ men's soccer team at Drew on Wednesday night.

The Lions went down a man after a red card just 18 minutes into the contest, but goalkeeper Julian Franco kept the Rangers at bay for most of the night to give TCNJ (2-3-1) a chance to steal a result and extend its unbeaten streak to three matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Franco kept the game scoreless with six saves in the first half, including a highlight-reel play in the 19th minute when he dove to his right to palm away a Matt Agudelo free kick from the edge of the box that was headed for the lower corner of the netting
  • Despite being a man down, the Lions had a golden chance to break the deadlock with about eight minutes remaining in the first half. A long throw-in found its way to Mike Garofalo, whose rocket shot from about just outside the six-yard box ricocheted off a Drew defender
  • Franco made a terrific save on a Kevin Kiernan free kick in the 58th minute, leaping to punch out a shot ticketed for the underside of the crossbar
  • The Rangers finally broke through the Lions' blockade in the 72nd minute as James Cahill fired a right-footed shot from just outside the box to the lower right-hand corner of the net, just past the reach of a diving Franco
  • With just over seven minutes remaining, David Anderson got free for a shot from the right side of the box. It rattled the post, but the rebound fell to Kenville, who managed to outmuscle a Drew defender to nudge the ball into the back of the net for a surprise equalizer

NOTES
  • Kenville's goal was his first of the season and the fourth of his career
  • Garofalo and rookie Chris Meder tied for the team lead with three shots, each putting one on target
  • Anderon earned an assist on Kenville's goal, his second career helper
  • Franco finished with seven saves, his second-highest tally of the season

UP NEXT
  • The Lions stay on the road to take on Stevens, which is currently unranked but started the season at No. 3 in the country
