Griffin and Colella Win Individual Titles at Will Abele Invite

COLLEGEVILLE, PA.- The TCNJ Wrestling team racked up a sixth-place finish Saturday at Ursinus College's Will Abele Invite. The 79.5 team points slotted them just behind Muhlenberg, who finished fifth with 80.5 team points.
 
Matthew Griffin (125) and Reid Colella (174) went undefeated on their way to individual titles in their respective weight classes on Saturday.
 
Griffin won his first two matches of the day by major decision and followed that up with a decision win. In the semifinal, he pinned East Stroudsburg's Brady Carter, previously a DII NCAA qualifier. Griffin handled business in the final with an 18-4 near tech. fall win against Muhlenberg's No. 7 ranked Joey Lamparelli.
 
After receiving a first-round bye, Colella cruised through his first two matches by major decision on his way to the semifinal. In that matchup, he had another near major with an 8-2 decision win against Sean Cowan of Ursinus. In an exciting finals matchup, Colella proved to be best with a 4-2 decision victory against RIT's Ben Dougherty.
 
Freshman J.J. Giordano (149) picked up a third-place finish for the Blue & Gold on Saturday. He started his day of with wins by major decision and tech. fall and then a 7-2 decision victory in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he fell to RIT's Mike Glynn before winning the third-place match by medical forfeit.
 
On the other end of that third-place matchup was Mike Conklin (149), who kicked off his tournament with two wins by fall. After a decision win in the quarterfinals, he suffered an injury in his semifinal loss and had to forfeit the consolation match against Giordano.
 
Chris Stavrou (197) and Jake Gerish (184) each finished sixth in their respective weight classes for TCNJ. Stavrou began the day with two pins before enduring his first loss of the day. He went to win in the next two matches before losing to Griffin Ostrom of Western New England. Gerish went 4-2 on the day with two pins as well; he lost in the fifth-place match to Wesleyan's Aris Dashiell.
 
Closing out the scoring for the Lions, Dave Giulian (184) and Louden Mazzeo (141) each claimed eighth-place Saturday at the Floy Lewis Bakes Center.
 
TCNJ wrestling has a home dual for the first time all season next Friday night as they host the Gothic Knights of NJCU at 6 PM.
