Softball Sweeps Oswego in Monday Doubleheader

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The TCNJ softball team swept Oswego State in a doubleheader on Monday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Lions won the opener, 3-0, before winning the second game, 7-2.

GAME ONE – TCNJ 3, Oswego State 0

The Lions registered only four hits in the game, but that was more than enough to generate three runs of offense. Kaci Neveling scored the team's first run in the bottom of the first after leading off the inning with a single. She scored on Julia Kinnally's squeeze bunt to make it 1-0.

The score stayed that way until the Lions added another in the bottom of the fourth. Kinnally led off the inning with a single and moved to second with two outs on Camryn Kitchin's ground out. Maya Knasiak came through with the clutch two-out hit, dropping a single into right-center field to plate Kinnally to make it 2-0.

TCNJ starting pitcher Elizabeth Gosse navigated baserunners in each of the first three innings without allowing a run. There were two runners on in the fifth inning when Gillian Roberts came in relief and the Lions still holding that 2-0 lead. A double steal put both runners in scoring position with one out, but Roberts got a strikeout and ground out to end the threat.

Mckayla Yard gave the Lions a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning when she scored on Julia Mayernik's ground out. Yard singled to lead off that inning, as well.

GAME TWO – TCNJ 7, Oswego State 2

The Lions pulled away in the final few innings of a close game to earn the sweep of the Lakers. Julia Roessler earned the victory after allowing just one earned run in 4.1 innings pitched. Knasiak earned her first save 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Yard led the offensive effort with three hits (two doubles) and two runs scored, matching Neveling in that category. Kinnally doubled home Neveling in the first inning, and she also singled home Yard in the third to make it 2-1 Lions. Mayernik followed with a double to deep center to chase home Kinnally, pushing the TCNJ lead to 3-1.

After Oswego scored in the home half of the third to make it 3-2 TCNJ, the Lions pulled away with a run in the fifth on a Yard RBI double to plate Neveling, a run-scoring single by Taylor Freudenberg in the sixth inning to make it 5-2, and two more insurance runs in the seventh inning. Mayernik and Kitchin each accounted for an RBI in that inning.

Kinnally and Mayernik each had two hits and two RBIs.

TCNJ returns to action on Tuesday against Mississippi University for Women at 11 a.m. and UMass Boston at 1 p.m.
