Baseball's Unbeaten Streak Snapped in Split with Dickinson

EWING, N.J.- The TCNJ baseball team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday, splitting the doubleheader with Dickinson after winning the first game 9-0 and falling in the second by a score of 3-2. The Lions (12-1) were the last remaining undefeated team in DIII baseball before dropping game two to the Red Devils (12-4)

GAME 1: TCNJ 9, Dickinson 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless top of the first, TCNJ jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first on three hits.
  • A Marcario infield single tacked on another for the Lions in the second as Mike LaGravenis crossed home.
  • Marcario was everywhere in game one as he picked up another two RBIs for himself in the sixth with a single down the right field line, putting TCNJ on top 6-0.
  • After seven innings of scoreless pitching, Ben Amon handed over pitching duties to Matt Santos for the final two frames. Amon finished his day with five strikeouts while allowing five hits with no walks.
  • TCNJ put up three more runs in the eighth before Santos closed out the ninth to secure the Lions 12th win in a row. Santos allowed just two hits in his two innings with no strikeouts or walks.

STANDOUT LIONS:
GAME 2: Dickinson 3, TCNJ 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Game two looked to be another slugfest with four total runs in the first three innings, but only one more run was scored the rest of the contest.
  • The Red Devils got on the board first in the top of the second on a single through the left side.
  • The Lions took no time to find the equalizer as they took the lead in the bottom of the second with two runs on two hits with an error in the field to take the lead right back from Dickinson.
    • Following a walk and a Zach Bowman single, LaGravenis reached on an error by the second baseman, which garnered enough time to bring home Bowman and Schumacher.
  • Dickinson tied things back up at two apiece on an infield single in the top of the third.
  • Jackson Malouf was replaced by Jack O'Shea after the sixth inning as Malouf finished with one earned run in his six innings. He struck out four, gave up four hits and walked four on the day.
  • The Red Devils found the lead in the top of the seventh on a double play with no outs and a runner on third.
  • The Lions had chances to tie the game and take the lead but were unable to bring any more runs home as they left a total of 13 runners on base in the 3-2 loss.

UP NEXT:
  • TCNJ baseball is back in action on Monday as they head to Madison, N.J. to face off against the Rangers of Drew University at 3:30 PM.
