Field Hockey Nipped by Bryn Mawr in OT Thriller

EWING, N.J. - The No. 14 TCNJ field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon as No. 22 Bryn Mawr found a golden goal late in overtime to seal a 2-1 victory in a thrilling clash of nationally ranked foes.

Isabel Maher scored her first goal of the season to put TCNJ on top early in the second quarter, and Brigitte Racey nearly made it stand up with a career-high 13 saves, but the Owls (3-1) tied it early in the fourth and managed to pull out a hard-fought battle late in the extra period.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Lions wasted little time breaking the stalemate as Maher was there to punch in the rebound from a hard shot by Rayhanah Ahmed off a corner, her first goal of the year giving the hosts a 1-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the second.

The Owls pressed back, forcing Racey into four saves in a two-minute span later in the frame, but Racey and the Lions' back line held firm and took that one-goal edge into intermission.

Bryn Mawr was on the front foot after the break, giving Racey five more shots to save in the third quarter alone. The Lions keeper was up to the task on each, including back-to-back stops off a corner midway through the frame and another set of consecutive saves late on.

The Owls found their equalizer two minutes into the fourth as Eva Yacura punched in a cross right in front of the cage, and neither side had a great look at a game-winner as the contest went into overtime.

TCNJ staved off a golden chance for Bryn Mawr early in the extra session as Novy Goetgeluk dribbled around Racey and fired on cage only for Rachael Teztlaff to knock it out for a defensive save. Ahmed had a look off a corner a couple minutes later, but her hard shot was right at the Owl keeper.

Bryn Mawr ended it with 2:29 left in the overtime period on Noor Werndlij's goal in transition.
