EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team continued its annual tradition of success against Ithaca and NYU in the Lions Tournament over the weekend, showcasing its depth and potential with a pair of strong efforts.
The Lions went 10-3 overall against Ithaca on Friday (3-1 in doubles and 7-2 in singles) before posting a 7-6 mark against NYU on Sunday, including a perfect 4-0 in doubles.
Harrison Maitland-Carter and
Alberto Thomas were each an unblemished 4-0 for the weekend to lead the Lions.
Maitland-Carter put up two convincing wins alongside new partner
Asa Wong, while Thomas reprised his pairing with
Brett Schuster to do the same.
Nathan Chan and
Aidan Twamley were similarly effective, dropping just five games in two sets.
Maitland-Carter's singles matches were mirror images of each other. In both, he dropped a first-set tiebreaker before rallying to claim the second set and a third-set super breaker; he edged Ithaca's Luis Crespo 6-7 (6), 6-3, 10-8 before outlasting NYU's Nithin Sankar 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-7 on Sunday. Thomas won all three of his completed singles sets with ease.
Sidd Arudi,
Bradley Deeds,
Max Loia, and
Max Nussbaum each registered wins in singles on Friday, where
Olufela Fieulleteau was also a convincing victor.
The Lions' top three doubles pairings all won either 6-1 or 6-2 against the Violets, with Fieulleteau teaming with Arudi for a hard-fought 6-4 victory.
Singles was not as kind to TCNJ on Sunday, but Thomas won in two straightforward sets and Loia notched an 8-5 pro-set win to go 2-0 on the weekend.
The Lions wrap up the fall slate at the ITA Northeast Regional, set for September 27-29 at Drew University.
