EWING, N.J. – The No. 10 TCNJ wrestling team polished off a workmanlike weekend with a strong effort on Saturday, handling visiting NYU by a 35-7 count inside the Rec Center.
Less than 24 hours after taking down 16
th-ranked Ithaca, the Lions (9-5) went right back to work and dropped just a pair of bouts against a Violets team that had been nationally ranked for much of the season and features four nationally ranked grapplers.
Matthew Griffin started on a high note with a first-period pin at 125, kicking off a run of four straight wins for the blue and gold.
Garrett Totten followed with a 12-5 decision at 133.
Sam Kotch, ranked 13
th at 141, edged 14
th-ranked Tyler Kadish by a score of 7-5, and
Mike Conklin stayed red-hot with a 6-4 win against Vincenzo Napolitana at 149.
The Violets (11-5) got on the board with a major decision from 3
rd-ranked Cooper Pontelandolfo at 157, but
Nick Sacco got TCNJ back on track with a first-period pin at 165.
Hunter Mays had little trouble at 174, dispatching Nicky Bell in a 14-3 major.
After NYU picked up a decision at 184,
D.J. Henry pinned Bennett Sonneborn in under two minutes at 197.
Matt Coon then closed it out with a 9-1 major against Evan Anderson at heavyweight.
NOTES
- Totten is now a perfect 10-0 since joining the Lions
- Conklin is still unbeaten in duals (13-0) and ran his season record to a robust 24-4
- Henry collected his second pin of the year, Griffin his fourth, and Sacco his sixth
