NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The TCNJ women's basketball team faced off against fourth-ranked Smith in its final game of the calendar year Wednesday afternoon, falling 85-61 to the unbeaten Bears.
Brooke McFadden was the lone Lion to score in double figures in the loss, with a trio of newcomers in
Riley Ahrens (8),
Olivia Voshell (8) and
Izzy Augustine (7) also making contributions off the bench. Defensively it was
Myah Hourigan-Hutton corralling a team-high six boards while
Grace Kowalski added two assists without committing a turnover in a season-high 34 minutes.
Smith's (9-0) Virginia Johnson and McFadden traded buckets in the opening minute of play before a lay-in from Hannah Martin kickstarted a 12-3 run that put the Bears in front 14-5 with 4:30 to go in the opening frame. The Lions stayed within striking distance midway through the second quarter thanks in large part to the play of McFadden and Kowalski – the junior finished second on the team with nine points – but with the score 27-20 in favor of the fourth-ranked team in the country, it was Smith closing the half on a decisive 20-4 run to take a 47-24 lead into the break.
Wednesday's third quarter was an offensive showcase that saw TCNJ (4-8) outscored 28-16 to fall behind 75-40 heading into the fourth, but it was the Lions flipping the script to the tune of a 16-0 start to the final frame to trim the lead back to 19 with 4:10 remaining. Unfortunately for TCNJ, the initial 35-point deficit was too much to overcome, with the sides trading blows down the stretch before the final buzzer sealed the 85-61 loss in the Lions's final game of 2025.
