Mays Takes 5th to Lead Wrestling All-American Quartet

3/15/2025 9:47:00 PM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The TCNJ wrestling team's four All-Americans wrapped up their sensational seasons at the NCAA Championships on Saturday.

Hunter Mays placed fifth at 174 pounds, Garrett Totten finished sixth at 133, Mike Conklin placed seventh at 149, and Nick Sacco took eighth place at 165. The four All-Americans mark the most for the Lions since they had five in 2020, the only other season since 2003-04 with more than four.

TCNJ finished 11th in the team standings with 38 total points, falling just shy of its first back-to-back top-10 national placement in over a decade.

Totten came within a whisker of the final. He jumped out to a 6-2 lead on No. 7 seed Bryce Parke of Coe, against whom Totten had won a 16-8 major decision at the NWCA National Duals in January. But Parke pulled even with four near-fall points from the top position in the second period, and took the lead with an escape to start the third. A penalty on Parke knotted it at 7-up, but Parke's riding time advantage won out and denied Totten a bid to the title bout.

Totten dropped a 5-1 decision to James Day of Wabash before being pinned by No. 4 Dominik Mallinder of UW-Whitewater in the fifth-place bout.

Mays came up against reigning national champion Jared Stricker of UW-Eau Claire, who came in 41-0 and booked his third consecutive trip to the 174-pound championship with an 8-0 major decision.

Mays lost, 6-1, to Millikan's Dejon Glaster but toughed out a 3-2 victory over Coe's LJ Richardson – his second over Richardson in as may days – to grab fifth place.

Conklin was pinned by McDaniel's Thomas Monn in his first bout, but ended his career in style with a 9-0 major decision over RIT's Mike Glynn.

Sacco was unable to compete on Saturday and was forced to settle for eighth place after a pair of medical forfeits.

NOTES
  • Totten finished his debut TCNJ campaign at 21-3, including a run of 21 consecutive victories with the Lions
  • Conklin ends his career as a three-time All-American, placing 7th in back-to-back seasons after an 8th-place effort in 2022
  • Conklin posted a career record of 107-33, including 37-7 in his final season
  • Sacco was also a 3-time All-American, finishing 4th in 2023 before winning the national title a year ago. He was a two-time regional champion and finished his career at 77-23 overall
  • Mays went 30-8 in his first season at TCNJ
  • Totten and Mays are the first Lions in their respective weight classes to earn All-America honors since Jake Giordano (133) and Dan Kilroy (174) did it in 2019 and 2020
