EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team posted a signature early-spring victory on Saturday, knocking off No. 37 Hobart, 6-1, in an impressive display.
The Lions (2-2) got off to a good start by taking the doubles point, thanks to
Brett Schuster and
Alberto Thomas holding off Troy Steiner and Jacob Linares, 7-6 (4) in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles. The two sides had split the first and third courts, with
Harrison Maitland-Carter and
Asa Wong securing a 6-3 victory over Hyat Oyer and Nick Fischer in the top flight.
TCNJ's only loss of the day was a three-setter at No. 4 singles, the blue and gold getting the best of a litany of tightly contested tilts elsewhere.
Maitland-Carter won a pair of tiebreak sets against Fischer, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3), on the top court. He was joined as a straight-sets winner by
Nathan Chan – who won 6-4, 6-4 over Steiner at No. 5 – and
Olufela Fieulleteau, who downed Marco Olmos 7-6 (4), 6-4 at number six.
Schuster and Thomas each went to a third set after their marathon doubles match, and both came out on top after conceding the opening set.
Schuster defeated Nick Grosso 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 at No. 3 singles, and Thomas won the match of the day at No. 2, where he staved off Oyer for a 5-7, 6-4, 13-11 triumph.
