EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, sweeping past William Smith, 7-0, on a windy afternoon.
The match was much closer than the score suggested, with three Lions winning third-set super tiebreakers in singles play.
TCNJ, however, won all nine contested matches. It started with a doubles sweep, as
Zoey Albert and
Shruti Mannan rolled to a 6-2 win on the top court.
Aira Abalos and
Anusha Perinkolam clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 decision at No. 2 before
Elizabeth Ring and
Gabriella Robinson held off Julia Pida and Mae Kellersman, 7-6 (5) in the third flight.
Albert (6-1, 7-5 at No. 1) and Abalos (7-5, 6-4 at No. 2) each won at least one tough set to seal straight-set victories in singles, and
Gabrielle Brideau handled Bethany Walker by an 8-3 count at number six.
The middle courts were all marathons, and all three went the way of the blue and gold. Mannan (No. 3), Robinson (No. 4), and Ring (No. 5) each rallied from a set down to claim third-set super breakers.
Mannan outlasted Kellersman 4-6, 6-0, 10-5, while Robinson scraped out a 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 defeat of Grace Magna. Ring was a 4-6, 6-0, 10-3 winner against Marin Montagne.
