Men's Tennis Sweeps Oneonta, Camden to Clinch WIAC East Crown

EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team clinched a repeat WIAC East Division title on Saturday in an intra-conference extravaganza at the Tennis Complex.

The Lions (8-6, 2-0) brushed aside Oneonta and Rutgers-Camden by matching 7-0 shutouts, easily claiming their second consecutive East Division crown and setting up another showdown with Wisconsin-Whitewater for the conference championship. TCNJ will host the 25th-ranked War Hawks on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m.

Alberto Thomas and Brett Schuster (No. 2) joined Sidd Arudi and Nathan Chan (No. 3) as 6-0 winners in doubles as the Lions quickly claimed the team point.

Harrison Maitland-Carter and Asa Wong, however, were pushed to the limit on the top court by Chris Chippari and William Schmid, ultimately outlasting the Red Dragon pairing in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6).

Singles was a cake-walk for the Lions, with five of the six singles players conceding no more than two games total.

Maitland-Carter soared past Schmid 6-1, 6-1 on the top court. Brett Schuster (6-0, 6-1 at third) and Olufela Fieulleteau (6-1, 6-0 at sixth) each dropped a single game, while Nathan Chan was a 6-0, 6-0 double-bagel winner at number five. Aidan Twamley won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.

Thomas had the toughest time but managed to gut out a pair of tight sets against Chippari, winning 7-5, 6-4 at number two.

The Lions' No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams again won 6-0 against the Scarlet Raptors. Maitland-Carter and Wong had a much easier time than in the previous match, rolling past Neal Shah and Alex Loope, 6-2.

Schuster (third), Chan (fifth), and Fieulleteau (sixth) all won 6-0, 6-0 in singles, and Thomas won his first set by the same score before his opponent retired.

Twamley was a 6-1, 6-0 victor at No. 4, and Maitland-Carter polished off the sweep with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Loope.
