ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The 20th-ranked TCNJ women's soccer team took on host St. Mary's (Md.) on Day 2 of the Seahawk Classic Saturday afternoon, settling for a 0-0 draw despite outshooting the Seahawks 19-0 in the contest.
Â
The Lions' (1-0-1) first chance came just over six minutes into the contest when
Bella Norman rifled a shot from 30 yards out that was collected by Kyleigh Bland. The sophomore netminder came up big once again in the 19th minute when a shot from
Alyssa Alfano looked poised to find the top left corner, but a strong hand forced the ball wide to keep the game scoreless.
Â
TCNJ's
Reilyn Carr,
Emily Weidner and
Charlotte Hare all found themselves with scoring chances late in the opening period, but it was Bland holding firm between the pipes as part of a five-save half that sent both sides into the break knotted at zero.
Â
Neither team put a shot on goal through the opening 30 minutes of the second half before
Caroline Mascone nearly turned the tides in the 79th minute. Turning beautifully around a Seahawk defender in the attacking third, the senior took a touch and fired a shot that was destined for the corner, only for a diving save by Bland to deny the senior of what would have been her first collegiate goal.
Â
TCNJ's 19th and final opportunity may have been their best, but
Maggie Murphy's header with just 15 seconds left on the clock rang off the crossbar, ending the game in a scoreless draw.
