Perry Logs First Career Win, Baseball Cruises Past John Jay

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Thanks to some excellent pitching by Tyler Perry and some consistent run support, the TCNJ baseball team got back to .500 on the year with a 12-6 win over John Jay College.

John Jay (1-6) scored in the first inning via a two-run homer, but TCNJ (5-5) responded with five runs of their own and never relinquished the lead. In the bottom of the first, the Lions loaded the bases and walked in a run via Tyler Provost to cut the lead in half. Jake Carter then tied the game with a sacrifice fly, after which another walk loaded the bases again. Alex Reiling then walked in a run to take the lead, and then Andrew Pearson drove in two runs with a single to make the score 5-2 after the first.

Both teams scored in the following inning, and John Jay threated to take back the lead in the fourth. The Bloodhounds put LC Smith into a jam and loaded the bases twice, but the Lions escaped after just giving up one run. TCNJ then responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a Braden Dromboski single which drove in Joe Tammaro and Provost (who wore a pitch on the helmet to get on base). John Jay threatened again in the top of the fifth, putting reliever Brady Reardon in a tough spot with two runners in scoring position. Once again, however, TCNJ was able to get out of it with just one allowed run.

TCNJ would hold John Jay scoreless the rest of the way, thanks in large part due to freshman Tyler Perry. Perry pitched four shutout innings and four strikeouts while not allowing a single hit or run. He entered in the sixth, retired the side in seven pitches, and kept up the efficient day on the mound until the last out of the afternoon. His team also scored four runs after he entered the game to help seal the win, highlighted by a three-run homer by Provost in the bottom of the seventh.
