MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Austin Hanni tossed an efficient 91-pitch complete game to guide the TCNJ baseball team past Mount Aloysius, 5-2, for the Lions' second consecutive win down in Myrtle Beach.
Hanni was dealing from the beginning in his first career win, allowing only one Mount Aloysius (5-9) baserunner in each of the first three innings. The Lions (7-8) also gave him an early three-run cushion to defend, scoring three runs in the third inning. In the third, TCNJ loaded the bases after a
Michael Contiliano single and consecutive walks from
Joe Tammaro and then
Tyler Provost.
Jake Carter then drew a four-pitch walk to score the first run of the game, which forced the Mounties into an early pitching change. The new pitcher could not stop the bleeding immediately, though, as
Brian Lovaglio doubled TCNJ's lead with a sacrifice fly.
Braden Dromboski then smashed a ball into the right-field corner which skipped over the wall off the bounce to score another run.
Hanni then ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth when the Lions were up 3-0, committing a pair of errors which put runners on the corners with one out. The next batter moved the runner on first to second with a sacrifice bunt, and the batter after that drove in a run with a single to center. On that play, however, Carter and Lovaglio made sure the Mounties only scored one in the frame. After the ball landed in center field, Carter picked up the ball and lasered a throw to Lovaglio on the right side of the plate. Lovaglio snared the throw and glided to the other side of the plate, ending the inning with a tag just in time on a sliding baserunner.
After that, Hanni bounced back nicely by retiring 12 of the next 13 batters while TCNJ added a couple more runs via RBI singles from Provost and Contiliano. In the ninth, Mount Aloysius managed to score their second run of the contest with two outs, but the Lions secured the final out of the game in the at-bat.
