Men's Tennis Digs Deep to Knock Off No. 30 Haverford

EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team worked overtime for its biggest win of the season.

Harrison Maitland-Carter, Faris Shehata, Aidan Twamley, and Brett Schuster all pulled out three-set singles victories – Shehata and Schuster in tiebreakers – to spark the Lions to a 5-2 upset of No. 30 Haverford on a warm Wednesday afternoon at the Tennis Complex.

The victory – over a Fords team that edged them 4-3 a year ago – was the blue and gold's first in three tries against a nationally ranked opponent.

The Lions (8-4) took the doubles point with wins on the top two courts, first a 6-3 win for Nathan Chan and Alberto Thomas at number two. The rubber match came in the number one flight, where Harrison Maitland-Carter and Asa Wong broke midway through the set and held on for a 6-4 victory against Marko Arboleda and Roberto Vazquez.

Haverford (6-8) quickly countered with convincing victories at number one and number three singles to take a 2-1 lead. The last four courts went the distance – and the Lions claimed them all.

Maitland-Carter held off Arboleda 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at number two singles to level the dual. That made it a best-of-three with the bottom three courts still at large.

Two of those remaining three-setters went all the way – to a third-set tiebreak. Schuster provided a crucial point by edging Lucio Kombo 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (5) at number six, and Twamley was moments behind with the clincher, a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 defeat of Caden Hsia at number five.

With the result already sewed up, Shehata went all the way to defeat Teo Bortan 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) at number four.
