EWING, N.J. – The No. 40 TCNJ women's tennis team capped off a remarkable regular season with a commanding 7-0 sweep over No. 35 Stevens inside the Rec Center on Sunday afternoon.
After honoring their lone graduating player,
Eleni Dakos, on Senior Day, the Lions went to work securing their second top-35 upset in the span of four days. TCNJ, which knocked off No. 30 Haverford by a 5-2 count on Wednesday, will enter the NJAC Tournament with an overall mark of 17-1 after handing the Ducks (13-2) just their second dual defeat of the year. The blue and gold didn't even drop a set in this one.
The Lions made an early opening statement with a sweep of doubles play. Dakos and
Gabrielle Brideau kicked things off with a 6-1 rout of Gigi Arenas and Stephanie Untermeyer at number two, and
Zoey Albert and
Shruti Mannan posted a 6-3 win over Wei-Wei Lai and Lorena Piegas on the top court.
Elizabeth Ring and
Gabriella Robinson polished off the clean sweep by edging past Alix Dry and Kaylee Hobbick, 6-4, on the number three court.
Dakos had the most convincing win in singles play, posting a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Dry in the number one flight.
Albert was a 6-4, 6-2 winner opposite Piegas at number two, and Brideau picked up a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Untermeyer at number three.
Mannan downed Lai 6-4, 6-2 at number four, Robinson handled Hobbick 6-4, 6-3 at number five, and Ring withstood a second-set tiebreak to hand Arenas a 6-1, 7-6 (4) defeat at number six.
NOTES
- Dakos is 41-8 overall in her lone season in Ewing
- Albert moved into 18th on the all-time charts with 118 career wins and counting; she has already established a new single-season personal best win tally with 42 so far
- Albert is now tied for 22nd with 65 career doubles wins, and Robinson moved into a tie for 24th with her 61st doubles victory
