Lucca's Career Day Leads Lacrosse to Dominant Win at Kean

UNION, N.J. – Marissa Lucca looked the part of an All-American in the TCNJ women's lacrosse team's  rout of Kean Wednesday afternoon, erupting for eight goals and three assists in a 19-5 win over the Cougars.

Lucca's eight goals are not only a career high but are also the most scored by a Lion since 2013 – the senior added a personal-best five caused turnovers, five draw controls and three assists in an all-around showing. Joining Lucca with multi-goal games were Kelly Nevins (4), Abbie Teefy (3) and Emily Potenza (3) – the quartet accounted for all but one TCNJ goal – while defensively it was Abby Williams sharing the team-lead in both caused turnovers (5) and ground balls (4).

The Lions (10-1, 2-0 NJAC) wasted no time opening the scoring in Wednesday's contest, getting two scores from Lucca in the first 1:11 to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The senior completed the hat trick just over two minutes later off a feed from Evie Campbell before Nevins added herself to the scoring column with her first of two free-position goals to push the lead to four. Turnovers plagued TCNJ over the ensuing six minutes of game time, but it was Lucca, Potenza and Nevins striking for the final three goals of the frame to put TCNJ up 7-0 after one.

The Lions extended their scoring streak to 10 with another trio of goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter before Kean (4-7, 0-1 NJAC) finally got on the board with a goal at the 8:29 mark. There with the response, however, was Ashly Herlihy, who scored a free-position goal just 43 second later to kickstart another 4-0 scoring run that gave TCNJ a 14-1 lead at the half.

Kean responded in the second half to the tune of a 3-1 run spanning the quarter change, but with 11:10 to go in the fourth it was Lucca scoring her career-best eighth goal of the afternoon to push the lead back to 12. A Nevins score and Potenza brace capped off a 4-0 burst following Lucca's goal that gave TCNJ its largest lead of the afternoon before the Cougars struck in the final minute, with the final buzzer sealing the 19-5 victory for the Lions.
