EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ men's tennis team is headed to Beantown for its long-awaited return to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The Lions (15-5) will travel to a regional pod hosted by Tufts this weekend and are set to face St. John Fisher in the first round on Friday. A win would send TCNJ into the second round and a matchup with No. 16 Trinity (Texas), with the host Jumbos lurking on the other side of the pod.
Â
TCNJ is back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 after capturing their first WIAC championship in program history with a watershed 4-2 win at Wisconsin-Whitewater last weekend. The Lions are seeking their first NCAA victory since sweeping Cabrini, 5-0, in the first round in 2017 at Middlebury.
Â
The Lions are led by an experienced core featuring seniors
Alberto Thomas and
Harrison Maitland-Carter, with juniors
Nathan Chan (No. 3) and
Aidan Twamley (No. 5) joining senior
Brett Schuster (No. 6) in the singles lineup.
Â
Rookie
Faris Shehata, who plays No. 4 singles, is on an 11-match winning streak.
Â
Maitland-Carter and
Asa Wong went 17-3 at number one doubles this spring, while Chan and Thomas were a robust 14-3 at number two.
Â
Shehata and partner
Sidd Arudi have lost just once in six matches together.
Â
St. John Fisher (12-3) is making its NCAA Tournament debut after edging past Alfred, 4-3, to win its first-ever Empire 8 championship.
Â
Trinity went 13-8 overall against a loaded slate, falling 4-3 to No. 15 Sewanee in the SAA championship match. An NCAA Tournament mainstay, the Tigers advanced to the third round in 2025 before falling to eventual national runner-up Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
