#14 Women's Soccer Shuts Out Berry, 3-0, in Non-Conference Finale

EWING, N.J. - The 14th-ranked TCNJ women's soccer team closed out its non-conference slate with a match against Berry Saturday afternoon, dominating from the opening kickoff en route to a 3-0 shutout win over the Vikings.
 
The Lions (5-0-2) wasted no time going on the attack in Saturday's match, rattling off three shots – including one on frame from Deondria Simon – in the opening two minutes. Two of those shots drew corners, but it wasn't until TCNJ's fourth insert of the half that the hosts finally broke open the scoring.
 
Maggie Murphy sent an in-swinging cross in toward the near post. Jenny Ward was the first to it, directing it down toward the near post, where it bounced on the goal line and in to give the Lions the 1-0 lead just 22 minutes in.
 
The junior nearly doubled her tally two minutes later after a nice individual effort set her up just outside the 18-yard box, but Ward saw her bending shot saved by Berry's (5-2) Riley Wilson in what was the final shot on frame of the opening stanza.
 
Saturday's second half told much of the same as the first, with the Lions getting shots on goal from Emily Weidner, Alyssa Alfano, Ava Visaggio and Hayden Tormasi early before it was Weidner beating the Vikings' defense to a Caroline Freer free kick to extend TCNJ's lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute.
 
The Lions' third and final goal came 10 minutes later off the foot of Murphy, who drew a foul in the box before rifling home to ensuing penalty to make it a 3-0 game, where it would stand until the final whistle.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • TCNJ held commanding leads in both shots (30-6) and shots on goal (12-0) in the win.
  • The Lions also piled on a season-high 14 corner kicks to Berry's two.
  • Ward led all players in shots (6) and shots on goal (4).
  • TCNJ made 18 subs in the match, with 17 players seeing over 20 minutes of action.
NOTES
  • Murphy's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season, while the junior's assist was her first.
  • Ward now ranks second on the team in points (9), coming via three goals and three assists.
  • Weidner's goal and Freer's assist were each their first of the season.
  • Ellen Williams recorded her third straight shutout and fourth of the season in goal.
UP NEXT
  • The Lions open up NJAC play Wednesday, Sept. 30 with a game against sixth-ranked Rowan. Kickoff for their conference-opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
