Field Hockey Tops DeSales, 1-0, in Home Opener

EWING, N.J. - The 25th-ranked TCNJ field hockey team hosted DeSales in its home opener Saturday afternoon, using Jillian Tetzlaff's first collegiate goal to claim a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs.
 
Despite controlling much of Saturday's game early on, it wasn't until the five-minute mark of the second quarter that the Lions (2-0) finally broke open the scoring on the backs of Codie Sciacca and Tetzlaff. The Bulldogs (1-1) looked to clear their half off a restart, but Sciacca was there to intercept the initial pass. The senior then found Tetzlaff just inside the circle, where the freshman beat her defender before backhanding a shot into the netting to secure her first collegiate goal and give TCNJ the 1-0 lead.
 
The Lions looked poised to add to that tally in the second half, racking up 11 penalty corners – eight of which came in the fourth alone – and 11 shots on goal, but it was DeSales' Lily Trocki standing on her head to the tune of 16 saves on the afternoon to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance.
 
Not much was asked of TCNJ netminder Brigitte Racey on the other end, but the graduate student answered her lone call to action in the fourth quarter, making her second and final save with just under seven minutes to go to preserve the shutout and clinch the one-goal victory at home.

  • The Lions fired off 32 shots in Saturday's contest, 17 of which were on frame.

STANDOUT LIONS
  • Tetzlaff scored her maiden goal in her first collegiate start.
  • Rachael Tetzlaff (4), Jadyn Huff (3) and Lila Maggio (2) each registered multiple shots on frame.
  • Sciacca remained impactful off the bench, tallying her first assist of the season.
  • Elena Bonfrisco registered her first career defensive save in the second quarter.
NOTES
  • TCNJ has now won seven straight against DeSales dating back to 2019.
    • This was the Lions' first shutout win over the Bulldogs since 2022.
  • Racey made her 60th start of her career in the win, passing assistant coach Wendy Trockenbrod to take sole possession of fifth-most all-time.
  • Both Tetzlaff and Nika Eschmann drew their first collegiate starts, while Lindsey Hoffman made her first start of the season.

  • TCNJ will kick off its three-game road trip Wednesday, Sept. 9 when they take on Haverford, with game time scheduled for 7 p.m.
