Biography

After redshirting four years ago, Joe King saw limited time on defense in 2004 behind two all-star performers, Michael Sykes and Justin Mannick. He got most of his primary duty that year on special teams and had a breakout sophomore campaign which culminated with a selection to the NJAC All-Star Second Team as a defensive lineman.

In 2004, he played in seven games and recorded five tackles, including a tackle for a loss (-3 yards), while helping to support the Lions on defense and on special teams. In 2005, he played in all 10 games and by season’s end was ranked No. 46 in Division III with his 0.8 sacks per game, which also ranked fourth in the NJAC. He picked up 33 tackles on the season and added 11.5 tackles for a loss (-69 yards). He had eight sacks for -65 yards as well and was part of the Lions’ defense that ranked nationally allowing just 96.0 yards per game rushing (No. 21) and only 285.5 yards per game of total offense (No. 37).

On the year, he had two multiple sack games as he had two against both LaSalle (-12 yards) and Montclair State (-20 yards) and added five pass breakups to his resume.

As a junior, King headlined the Lions’ team after earning a selection to the NJAC All-Star First Team. King led the Lions and the NJAC in sacks with his 11.5 sacks on the year (-79 yards) and ranked seventh in Division III with his 1.2 sacks per game average. The 2006 campaign marked a career best season for the junior. He ranked second in the league in tackles for a loss (15.5 for -92 yards). He was part of a defensive unit that also ranked among the national statistical leaders in several categories. TCNJ ranked 26 in team total defense (247.9 ypg), 43rd in rushing defense (96.6 ypg), and 10th in sacks per game (3.3) and 23rd in opponent fumbles recovered (13).

King was a 10-game starter last fall and added 39 tackles (24 UT, 15 AT) with two pass breakups, and a blocked kick. On the 2006 season, he had a sack in seven different games this fall with three multiple sack performances, including four against FDU-Florham. In 2006 he also added five multiple tackles for a loss games as well. In just 27 games with the Lions, games with the Lions, he already has 77 career tackles and 28 for tackles for a loss (-164 yards) with 19.5 career sacks (-144 yards).

He is the younger brother of TCNJ’s former football player, Chet King. Joe possesses great athletic ability and will help anchor one of the defensive lines this year after establishing himself in 2005. He is a graduate of Governor Livingston High School and earned three letters in football scholastically. He is majoring in health and exercise science at TCNJ.
